Pseudo-standards monopoly destroys parental choice
Cato Institute’s Neil McCluskey points out in his stellar piece that the latest federal push towards national uniformity called the Common Core State Standards is fundamental flawed in two ways. First, it ignores the uniqueness and individuality of each and every child in this country, and second, it creates a pseudo-standards monopoly that destroys choice.
Wyoming policymakers should understand these fatal flaws and move instead to create and support systems that hand real choice over to parents where it belongs, e.g., multi-family home schooling; secular as well as religious private schools; educational savings accounts; charter schools; virtual schooling; home school student participation in some public school programs such as the arts, sports, and science labs. Having to compete -- and cooperate -- with options such as these leads to upgrading of the public schools themselves.
